On Friday 1 July, it will be 100 years since the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, the bloody and significant battle of WW1.
There are many events planned nationally and here at University Academy Kidsgrove, we will be having a minute silence at 10.44am.
The young soldier in the photograph is Mr Isaac Kirkham, great-grandfather of one of our Maths teachers, Mrs Moody. He was in the 2nd Welsh Borders Battalion. He died in the first five minutes of the battle, his unit of 700 were wiped out by 7.35am, they didn’t get very far. He was just 23 when he died, leaving a wife and two young sons, one of whom (Mrs Moody’s grandfather) he sadly never saw.
