Oliver Simpson (10GR) recently competed in the British Gas National Swimming Championships in team and individual events over a period of 5 days. He won 3 medals in team events.
Day 1: 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay – 2nd place, Silver Medal
As the event approached, the atmosphere was electric and the crowd could hardly hear the commentator! It promised to be a very close as there was virtually nothing between the times following the heats that morning.
Oliver finished with a superb time of 55.3 seconds, a new personal best! The team came 2nd winning a silver medal.
Day 2: 100m Freestyle – 4th place
Oliver came in 4th place with a fantastic time of 55.05 seconds and only missed out on a medal place by 0.02 seconds!
Day 3: 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay – 3rd place, Bronze Medal
Oliver achieved another new personal best of 2.01 minutes and the team finished in 3rd place winning a bronze medal.
Day 4: 200m Freestyle
Oliver finished his heat in 2.02 minutes which meant that he unfortunately, missed out on qualifying for the final by 0.5 seconds.
Day 5: 4 x 100m Individual Medley Relay – 2nd place, Silver Medal
The team went into the final of this event ranked 3rd. Oliver was swimming the last leg and the team were in 3rd place when he began. With 50m to go he was still just behind the other team in second place. He touched in with an amazing time of 54.97 seconds (almost 2 seconds off his entry time for the 100m Freestyle event) and the team finished in 2nd place, gaining another silver medal.
