Food Technology – Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11)

Welcome to Food Technology KS4 (Years 9, 10 & 11)

This course builds upon the knowledge, skills and techniques that students acquired in Years 7 and 8 by expanding upon what they already know, broadening their horizons to a grander scheme of how food technology affects the way we live today.  Students will also use other areas of the Technology Department for the development of their work, such as I.C.T and Graphic Design packages to help create their own brand of packaging for the items they create.

Students will explore food as material and the way it is prepared, cooked, served stored, processed and preserved, examining the process from the very beginning until the end.  They will also look at existing food products and packaging, analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the product and where it could be improved, before using this knowledge to create their own food items.  This will involve investigation work on the industrial processes in the food industry, and is an important part of the course.

The pupils will learn through:

  • Discussions
  • Brainstorming
  • Practical lessons
  • Investigation work
  • Presentations
  • Paired and group work
  • Independent learning
  • Peer teaching
  • Quizzes

Some pupils described their lessons by saying:

  • “I love food technology because of the practical work, and I liked doing the coursework.”
  • “I like food technology as you learn so much.”
  • “I love food technology as I have designed and made my own cakes!”
