On Wednesday 8 June, a group of year 7 and 8 pupils took part in the Newcastle District Rounders Tournament. They had only trained as a team a few times and they had never played in a competitive game before. Despite this, the students gelled from the start and were eager to play. The older and more experienced players in the team did a sterling job of organising the order of batting and coached the inexperienced players throughout the games.
After a nervous start, the team won their first game against Chesterton 7 ½ to 4, and then took their new found confidence into the second game against Clayton and won 6 to 4. Winning both games in their group took the team through to the semi final against Wolstanton. Despite some excellent hits from Wolstanton, the girls went on to win 5 ½ to 4 ½. They were ecstatic to reach the finals as this has never been done by a Y7/8 team before! Unfortunately the team narrowly missed out on a win against St John Fisher, and came 2nd overall.
The PE department at the Academy are extremely proud of the rounders team and what they have achieved. They are now training for next year and are going to their next tournament with a winning attitude.
Player of the tournament goes to Lauren Cade for her superb fielding skills!
